Re: Biggest Disapointments
It wasn't on a cruise but my biggest disappointment was seeing Niagara Falls. I had imagined the falls would be surrounded by beautiful natural countryside. Well if you haven't been there the falls themselves are amazing but they are surrounded by tacky hotels, advertising hoardings all over the place - looks a really run-down area - or at least it did when we were there about 15 years ago - maybe things have changed.

It has been smartened up a lot, we were there in 2010 ..... you perhaps went to Niagara City for the tack but Niagara-On-The-Lake is beautiful and extremely upmarket.CaroleF wrote:It wasn't on a cruise but my biggest disappointment was seeing Niagara Falls. Re: Biggest Disapointments
I don't think I've ever been really disappointed in anywhere I've been, some places were not as nice as I thought they would be but we all look for different things in a place, my one disappointment was our Xmas 2011 cruise when Grand Turk and Caicos Islands were cancelled as I was really looking forward to that as it is one of the few Caribbean Islands I haven't been to, as it happened my husband had an accident and we had to cancel the cruise anyway so I still wouldn't have got there
QB just to make you feel better ... you would have hated Ponta Delgada ( I lie
) just look at it from a positive point of view it's a good excuse for booking another cruise which will call there

My biggest disappointment was having Tallin cancelled to catch up after engine toruble only to have the Captain point it out in the far distance as we sailed on to St Petersburg.
Most unexpected amazing thing though was Ponta Delgaga and the twin lakes in glorious sun - followed by a sailaway through a hailstorm and lightning drinking Pussers Number 4 mix swathed in bkankets on our balcony. I kid you not!!

We were also disappointed with the toboganning in Funchal - it had been raining earlier and because the roads were still wet the 'drivers' took things very steady and sedately so there was no excitement at all. Again, we agree with the poster who said they found the area around Niagara Falls tacky and disappointing but that was about 12 years ago. On the other hand, I expected to be disappointed about not getting into Egypt when the voting was taking place a couple of years ago but actually it was almost a relief - I didn't realise how much I was feeling on edge about the stops at Port Said and Alexandria.

Biggest disappointment.....the tacky souvenir shops around Mallory Square in Key West. Last time we visited 15 years ago it was a beautiful area - now it's like Blackpool with sun!

Biggest disappointment for me has to be the Pyramids and Cairo. I had been warned about Cairo itself but the Pyramids were just not how I imagined at all.

Last summer I went to Blackpool - which reminded me why I hadn't been there since 1971

Hong Kong! I was expecting to really like it, instead, I found it claustrophobic and couldn't wait to leave.

Hong Kong island I thought OK, but Kowloon, apart from the waterfront walk, we did not enjoy.

I agree, what a disappointment. It was slow and sedate
I spent the 1990's in Disney and other theme parks, and was used to fast rollercoasters.
The Funchal ride was like something for 90 year old great aunt Doris!

It used to be very fast when the roads were all cobbled. Then they replaced the slippery cobbles with nice grippy tarmac!

We did it in 1978 with the cobbles ... and pig slurry and it went like a bat out of HellMervyn and Trish wrote:It used to be very fast when the roads were all cobbled. Then they replaced the slippery cobbles with nice grippy tarmac!

I fear Elf and Safety would ban the slurry as well as the cobbles these days.

Re: Biggest Disapointments
I generally have a positive outlook on things, and usually manage to concentrate the good things about a place, rather than the negative. There are very few places ever where I was totally disappointed. However, we once had an appointment in Essex, and rather than heading straight home, I couldn't resist the oportunity to visit the seaside. I apologise to all our Essex members, but I can honestly say that Southend is the one place I never, ever want to visit again. At the time we described it as 'Blackpool without the style!'
