We have just upgraded, done away with our zombie boiler, which other than gas usage has not cost us a penny in maintenance during it's 40 odd years of service. As an original Corgi engineer, serviced myself, we now have a all singing and dancing system boiler.
Our 22 year old oil boiler got serviced twice ... 2005, 2016 ... both times because it failed to fire up. Usually the engineer asked 'when was it last serviced' and I just told him I would have to look it up (I am sure he knew fine rightly). Funny enough in our street, despite all the neighbours having their boilers serviced regularly, our boiler was last-man-standing (probably had all the efficiency of a combine harvester though).

The lovely gas people fitted us with a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 8000 life 35Kw system boiler (means little to me, but it seems to do the job).

We have a Vaillant boiler which was fitted about four years ago. Have it serviced each year which to my mind is money for old rope. But hey ho, it needs to be done to keep the warranty validated.

Yea, the gas engineer expressed quite strongly that I would have to change my boiler servicing habits :)

I retired just as the modern boilers were becoming the main stay for work.
Old boilers up to an hour to strip down and carry out tests.
New boilers, visual check, shove the probe in, jobs a good-un.
Life for the engineers just get easier.
Don't worry, be happy

But the modern boilers will need replacing much earlier than the old ones.

Because they are inferior, longevity wise ...

That is actually not so. Modern gas boilers are far more resilient due to the fact that they have far fewer parts in them.

The major issue is the more sophisticated computer circuitry, which if it fails, more often than not requires a total replacement, according to my corgi engineer.

We have an “All Electric Aga” the cost of a control panel replacement works out at about £1200 + plus fitting…. thankfully we had it insured which covered the cost of replacement…it does however cost us nigh on £270 per year to insure it.

Ours came with a 10 (?) year warranty. Seems to include everything apart from consumables and stupidity.
That is much longer than a few years back when my brother got his installed ... probably so little to go wrong in them these days.

I have found a new way to save electricity, our oven element blew up on Saturday and I am waiting for our electrician to return from his hols on Thursday to replace it. A good job our 40 year old microwave is still functioning.

That's spooky my oven went about 2 weeks ago, made a big loud bang and I thought it was the element. The electrician said it was the fan, and the thermostat and fhe selector switch.

Has to use small top oven and microwave, all mended now.

 I will indeed although we are still on a learning curve.

Made an orange flavoured cake last Sunday to take to one's seriously poorly bestest mate but it turned out like wartime bread pudding. So ... is super stodgy caused by overcooking or too much liquid ? :?

10 years for a boiler is no time at all.

In our last place our Lincoln gas boiler was 25> before it was condemned by a service engineer due to the exhaust pipe join no longer being at the right angle (according to his new rules 'n' regs)

Our present boiler is a Grant, it is situated outside the house and is oil fired. It's 22 years old and running at 97% efficiency. Will be lucky to get 15 years out of any replacement according to our ' man '.

Our last one was replaced after 25 years or so, not because there was anything wrong with it but spares were becoming obsolete and if it had failed mid winter we could have been cold for days. This new one should see us through until either our personal guarantees expire or the climate police force us to have a heat pump powered by the deforestation of Canada.
