Just seen that they estimate £150m will be bet on the National. Most of that will be lost into the bookies' pockets of course.

Instead the punters could pay the entire cost of the Royal Family for a year and still have £50m left for a damned good night out.

Sounds like a plan to me.
We already do  Horse racing brings a significant economic benefit for the UK, with the industry generating £4.1 billion in direct, indirect and associated expenditure annually for the British economy.

He'll have enough money for a VIP ticket to the Coronation. Maybe keep Harry-No-Mates company in the restricted view seats.

But at least with the Lottery your money does go to good causes and not the bookies back pocket!

The annual barbaric death fest continued with three horses needing to be destroyed.
I’m aware that some find it a spectacle but really, in 2023 ?
How many horse deaths before people start reacting

We are told that the horses love it and it’s what they are bred to do.
Let’s try next year with no jockeys whipping them and see how many horses willingly run the race.

Or better still - make the racehorse owners and/or those who bet on them jump over the fences with someone on their back.

For once I agree with the animal rights protesters - although not their methods.

Jump racing should be banned - never seemed to be a problem with banning fox hunting!

I put abusing any animal in the same category as abusing children.

One of the horses that died fell at the first ... does that suggest the horse wasn't up to the job or there were too many runners ?

If that many athletes died in races would we say it's okay because they enjoy running?

They are herd animals and as such enjoy running together…every horse has the opportunity too duck out of jumping the fence in front of them (with or without their jockey) some do many don’t, some take the easier option of going round in order to keep up with the herd.

As I have already stated all equine sports have their fatalities, some more than others, but in the case of racing, it is what they are bred to do.
All you animal activists should get yourselves down to your nearest Halal slaughterhouse if you want to know what cruelty is all about…a little pray and a lot of bloodletting.

The only good thing about banning horse racing will be that you get cheaper cat and dog food for the next few years

If that is true then all horse breeders should be prosecuted for cruelty.

I don't want horse racing banned, after all it's the sport of kings but I do want the jumping variety stopped. It's cruel and why do the jockeys need to whip them like they do. I don't like horse racing full stop but understand that many enjoy it and it's a hugh industry and contributes to the economy back take the fences down.

Would that be the nation's economy or the bookmaker's economy?

Hi Paul, fair point, (for your information)…”The whips used in British racing are foam-padded and energy-absorbing, and the thresholds for use are extremely low – the whip can be used only seven times in a flat race or eight times in a Jump race before the stewards will review the ride.
If used properly, there is no welfare problem associated with use of the energy-absorbing whip in Britain. Indeed, Britain is among the world leaders in terms of the regulation of use of the whip in racing.
Due to the fact that the limits on use are set so low, and the padded design of the whip, only in the most extreme cases would a breach of our whip rules constitute a welfare issue.
Despite this, the sport continues to impose strict penalties on breaches of the whip rules, in order to act as a deterrent against misuse. In addition, a further review of our whip rules has recently been announced, to ensure that the rules and penalties are providing a sufficient deterrent to prevent rule breaches”.
You ask the question “why do Jockey’s whip them like they do”? fair question, and one which I will try and answer…One shouldn’t think of the whip as a tool that inflicts pain (see above) the whip has several functions one of which is to keep the horse concentrating on what it is supposed to be doing, a slap on the a*se or shoulder reminds the horse to stay focused especially as they are approaching jumps, they also help horse keep going straight. Whilst I agree that it doesn’t look nice I think as far as NHR is concerned more horses would get injured by not having their minds made up at fences than allowing the horse to second guess and jump awkwardly.

On that note, my sister phoned this morning and said…”did you see all those horses carry on jumping the fences without their jockey onboard” ?

That would seem a good compromise to me.
