I've had an idea for a steady and almost imperceptible transition to 100% flat racing. Every time a horse or jockey is killed or injured at a fence remove that fence. In10 years time the National will be a flat race without anybody noticing.

It might surprise you to know that flat racing isn’t without its fatalities, indeed about a third of race horses die due to injuries sustained on the flat.
As for jockey deaths vs fence removal…. you could be waiting around 70 years to get rid of half of the National fences on present statistics.

One of the problems is that the inside is the shortest way round and quite a few jockeys try to attain that position causing a concertina affect for those behind, Indeed, this is what happed to my hot tip “Darasso” which got very badly hampered and unseated rider by a horse falling in front.

You're absolutely right. I know sod all. But that doesn't stop anyone else on this forum putting their opinions forward!

The only sport I know anything about is Formula 1, where despite the incredible speeds involved serious injuries are infrequent and deaths very rare these days. I guess if drivers were frequently killed in races, or worse broke a leg and were then shot by the course doctors, there would be a bit of a hoohah.
