There was a lot of long term capital spending, which may or may not help to grow the economy, especially if, as usual, it goes way over budget. But it's the short term below inflation increases for some depts. that potentally could create problems for us, and her.david63 wrote: 11 Jun 2025, 14:35The main thing that I am getting from Rachel's spending review is that Council Tax will be going up!
It remains to be seen how much of this spending review actually come to anything, or is it just words?

Indian Air disaster
I know one shouldn’t speculate but looking at the devastation on the ground I rather suspect there will be many more tragic stories to be told.
Very sad news

The way the plane went down one would hope the passengers wouldn’t have known their fate?

It makes a change for the owners to do something positive immediately rather than prevaricating as is the norm.
Tata Group, which owns Air India, says it will give 1 crore rupees – the equivalent of around £86,000 – to the families of each person who was killed in the crash.
It will also cover the medical expenses of those injured and provide support for rebuilding the medical hostel that was hit.
"No words can adequately express the grief we feel at this moment," it says

Is Netanyahu (aided and abetted by Trump) trying to start World War III - because it certainly looks like it to me?
And yet again Israel is bombing and killing children indiscriminately - and I doubt anyone can claim that children are building nuclear weapons in their bedrooms.

I think they are both airing on the side of…Oh’ sh*t, Iran might be moving towards nuclear warheads…now that would be frightening.david63 wrote: 14 Jun 2025, 13:41Is Netanyahu (aided and abetted by Trump) trying to start World War III - because it certainly looks like it to me?

It seems that when the boot is on the other foot that Israel is not a happy bunny. It is alright for Israel to "accidentally" hit hospitals in Gaza when targeting other sites but is not alright when Iran hits an Israeli hospital when aiming for a military site.
Hitting any hospital in any circumstances is not alright and under international law is illegal.

I don't think anyone wants Iran to develop nuclear weapons. But, cynically maybe, I think this latest conflict is all too conveniently talking the spotlight off Gaza.

Why would they bury a uranium enrichment site deep underground if they only wanted to enrich uranium for energy supply, and why bother with nuclear power when they have cheap oil and gas for power plants?david63 wrote: 19 Jun 2025, 19:12Even Trump's National Security Advisor is saying that there is no evidence that Iran is developing nuclear weapons but, apparently, Trump without any evidence claims to know betterMervyn and Trish wrote: 19 Jun 2025, 17:15I don't think anyone wants Iran to develop nuclear weapons.

Hybrid working.
Working from home seems to be the way forward- though I do have serious doubts especially for those who are just setting out on their career. Learning from senior colleagues and the social side of being part of a group were very important to me when I started work in a town away from where I was brought up.
I suppose WfH does ease traffic congestion a little but it has little benefit for energy use-both your home & your office need to be lit and heated & you will already have paid tax on the money you use to heat & light your home through the day.
I must admit the following from a report about a proposed strike at Liverpool University left me shaking my head.
“It takes me 15 minutes on the train, but 45 minutes walking to get to campus. Now I’m hybrid working, I have to carry a backpack with all my work gear which can weigh up to 10kg due to laptop, headphones, lunch and anything else required for a day away from home.
“By the time I’ve finished two days on campus, I am so tired physically and mentally that I’m good for nothing the following day.”
If that’s the case then I hope that Friday will be a campus day.

10kg? What are they carrying? I carried not much more than that when I did the Coast to Coast walk living out of a rucksack for a fortnight. Some people need to man up!!!

Round the lot up, stick them on a plane, with or without a working parachute then drop them off somewhere in the Red Sea. Theses nutters could have easily replaced paint for nuts and bolts thrown into the engines.
