We then replayed the programmes and went through the whole gambit of sniffing and swilling. We looked for the hues of boot polish, blackberries etc. What a load of old baloney!! All we could sense was a glass of red wine. Good luck to those whose noses are far more cultured than ours but we couldn't help feeling it was a case of The Emperor's New Clothes and we had been sucked in. Sadly we are still ignoramuses as far as fine wines are concerned.
Whilst we do have the occasional glass of wine it's not really our scene although when we lived in Germany we spent many a merry night drinking Chateau Beauregard, a Bordeaux which I remember as being able to drink all night and wake up without a blinding headache. At the time that made it top alcohol for a good night out.
