Do you remember Jilly Goulden and Oz? Being wine ignoramuses we decided we might be missing out on something and it was only our ignorance which was holding us back. We recorded a couple of their programmes and armed with the balloon type glasses set off to our local supermarket to pick up some of these wines.
We then replayed the programmes and went through the whole gambit of sniffing and swilling. We looked for the hues of boot polish, blackberries etc. What a load of old baloney!! All we could sense was a glass of red wine. Good luck to those whose noses are far more cultured than ours but we couldn't help feeling it was a case of The Emperor's New Clothes and we had been sucked in. Sadly we are still ignoramuses as far as fine wines are concerned.
Whilst we do have the occasional glass of wine it's not really our scene although when we lived in Germany we spent many a merry night drinking Chateau Beauregard, a Bordeaux which I remember as being able to drink all night and wake up without a blinding headache. At the time that made it top alcohol for a good night out.
I was taught to be cautious

Unfortunately, yes I do remember them, and I particularly remember La Goulden stating that a particular wine was "busty". How on earth can a wine be "busty"? I thought, I'm not drinking it if she's been dangling her chesticles in it.....

My very favourite wine is a white Zinfandel which looks like a rose but is actually made with white grapes apparently, blossom hill is my brand of choice but Beringer do a nice one too. It's a lovely fruity wine with a slightly strawberry taste and is very refreshing on a hot summers day ( and not so bad on a cold day either ) red wine gives me a headache and white is just too dry for me usually. Also love cocktails, and a nice glass of Pimms.

WE had a wine-tasting evening at church a few weeks ago and were taken through the whole charade of wine drinking.

First, swirl the wine in the glass and notice how quickly or slowly it trickles back down. The longer it takes, the longer it will linger in your mouth as you swallow.

Look at the colour. The deeper the hue, generally, the older it is.

Then bury your snout in the glass and breathe deeply. This gives a better indication of the flavours as more taste sensors are in our nose than on our tongue.

Take a sip, purse your lips and suck in some air. This enhances the flavour.

Finally, swallow.

We had a guy on our table last year who went through all this rigmarole, truth was he knew b****r all about wine but if it cost xx it must be good  and he'd been to a wine tasting seminar  he did mention on the last night his bar bill was a bit of a shock, that will teach him in future just to drink the cheap plonk like the rest of us !!

I love champagne, a nice dry white, Sauvignon Blanc or whatever is on offer at Tesco, Pimms, Vodka and tonic (used to be diet coke but I've boycotted it after reading about the poison that is aspartame - DON'T CONSUME ANY!, Bailey's original, a drop of dry cider on a hot day, brandy, and whatever is cocktail of the day when I'm on a ship.

A Peroni beer or three! Has to be in a tall Peroni pint glass too.

Don't drink spirits or beer, enjoy a glass of wine, but not white. So Wolf Blass Shiraz Cabernet or on hot days a nice Pinot Blush... always buy when on offer in Sainsbury and never sniff them, swirl them, suck in air or spit them - what a load of rubbish - Just drink and enjoy

Good choice, jacknian, excellent for drinking in the sunshine on a nice summer's day. We have got through pretty much a bottle a day over the last week. Those produced in California are amongst the few good things to come out of the USA.

Haven't had White Zinfandel for a long time. I recall people being very snobbish about it but I think if it tastes nice then drink it! I think I stopped drinking it because it was so sweet and easy to drink I'd get through the bottle in no time and wanted more - cue hangover.

Like Jacknian, red wine gives me a headache. My husband’s favourite red wine is Amarone. I prefer Champagne but I’m happy to drink Cava. I enjoy a glass of Celtic Mist (made in IOM) which is similar to Baileys but far superior in my opinion. I had a Singapore Sling in Raffles which was delicious although extortionate. I thought I’d have one on the ship but it bore no resemblance to the one in Raffles. I confess I worked my way through all of the cocktails on the ship to find my favourite. I still haven’t decided so I’ll have to go through them all again on my next cruise. :D

I'm disappointed now - I thought that American Champagne was something so wonderful that after drinking it you saw stars and stripes.

I like champagne but enjoy cheaper sparkling wine if it's not too sweet.

I also like a nice full bodied red Italian Barolo( aldi had the best a couple of years ago for £8.99) Also like a Fleurie (a lighter French red)
Not keen on Tonic, Im afraid I still drink Vodka, diet coke and use sweetex..
Cider..used to drinK Merrydowns, not sure if that is around still, but I like pear cider now.
Ohhhhh and Baileys.....on ice and has to be a double.... yes please !!!

On a warm summers evening I don’t think you can beat a nice glass of pear cider....
