The Queen once waved and smiled at me but Philip, bless him, looked the other way...It was during her Maj's Golden Jubilee year...She went down our road on her way to a posh lunch at the Addington Palace (former home of the Archbishop of Canterbury and hunting grounds of Henry 8)...We waited ages and ages for her to drive by and when she finally did she looked straight at me, waved and mouthed to Pip..." there's Paul the Palace fan..Watcha Paul" or something like that...There was about 100 of us waiting to see them but she only spoke to me.

I admired Prince Andrew during the Falklands War as he deliberately put himself in danger flying decoy missions in his helicopter. However, my respect for him diminished as his reputation as "Air Miles Andy" grew.

As you know, paint doesn't stick to concrete very well. So some little herbert was sent round to repaint them. With a spray gun. His work was inspected and it was noticed that the paint had sprayed over onto the grass. I kid you not, the next day, he was back, painting the grass green. Margaret was being entertained to luncheon in the Officers' Mess. A full rehearsal was held, with someone's wife standing in as the princess. All the invited officers wives had to have a brand new dress for the rehearsal, and another brand new dress for the main event.
