Re: Judging people by their names
We had friends surnamed King and they found a number of names that didn't work too well with that - starting with Wayne........

And what about the family who called their child ( born in the early 60s) John F. When asked what the 'F' stood for, they hadn't the foggiest - it was just Eff - Like the president

Cherokee Piper Fuller-Jones was the unfortunate name given to a little girl the local authority took into care many years ago when I worked in the legal dept. She was thankfully adopted but I wonder did the family change her name - can't think what her parents were thinking

Re: Judging people by their names
Oh dear this is such a sore point for me. My son and his wife have given their eldest son an unfortunate name to put it politely. They wanted something unique they said. I tried my best to talk them out of it and my daughter in law almost fell out with me over it. He has been lucky in that he is being educated at private schools. I'm sure if he'd been at a state school he would have suffered because of his name. I do worry that when he starts applying for work in the future, he will be judged by his name.

Re: Judging people by their names
The thing connected with names that I judge people on is their age, as names go in and out of fashion.
When I worked for a large bank, we'd play 'guess the age of the borrower,' just based on their first and middle names
It was usually easier with a joint mortgage as you had more info to work with, but I got so skilled at it, I was often correct to within 5 or 6 years of their dates of birth.
Incidently, as Ken started this thread, I usually have Kens down as being born in the 1930's .......... I think I'm wrong on this occasion !

touchy subject that one:Gill W wrote:The thing connected with names that I judge people on is their age, as names go in and out of fashion.
I asked my mother: why , oh why was I Margaret....
Her reply: cos it doesn't age...
They hadn't reckoned on Princess Margaret being a naughty girl a couple of years after I was born and the name stopping - just like that
though I have hopes that future royal babies might have it as a middle name

Re: Judging people by their names
my junior daughter was given an unusual name.....
she now moans regularly that we gave her a name that is 2 a penny...
how were we to know it'd hit the best seller list within a couple of years and stay there?

Have had dealings with a chap whose first name was Sausage - never met him, so I never asked.
Also knew of a woman whose name was Squirrel Squirrel. Someone else asked her about it and all she said was that her parents were hippies.

Re: Judging people by their names
It was reported in one of the papers, The Sun IIRC, that some poor boy had been named Drew Peacock.
His father was quoted as saying he only saw the problem when one of his works colleagues referred to him as 'Droopy's dad' !!?!

Re: Judging people by their names
I remember my father getting a write up in one of the local newspapers (back in the 70's). In the story they mentioned his name 4 different times each time it had a different spelling. My father made a complaint and apparently the reporter asked him "how do you spell your name" ... my fathers response was "exactly as it is pronounced" ... which it is.

I see Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have called their child, not sure of sex, North so the child's name is North West. No comment.
When I got my payroll decree my husband was tickled as some one was called Polly Parrot

I once had a guy work for me, although I did not recruit him
His first name was Jesus, he was German and was Black.
Unfortunately he had a very large chip on his shoulder, and did not stay very long.

I've seen Katie Hopkins on ITV's This Morning programme and I'm sure they keep having her on to debate this and that because she is so ridiculous. I saw her on the names debate and decided that she is an insufferable snob but am glad to say that she lost the debate by a very large margin to a woman who was an Irish immigrant and whose two children have both graduated as doctors. Spare us from the likes of Katie Hopkins.

I used to have a manager called Bryan Hollocks. Used to laugh every time I worked past his office.
