I am so happy that both my neighbours and all of my immediate circle of friends are non-smokers (as are my work colleagues and my parish councillors).

It always comes as a shock when one is near smokers once again eg the confines of a cruise ship in open deck areas. Most unpleasant. I also feel for those passengers who have booked a balcony cabin and have some smokers next door 'downwind' causing a nuisence by not parking their stupid, offensive and dangerous habit till they're in port.

I look forward to the day when smoking is as rare as wearing a monocle or taking snuff.

Morning ship mates

I have never ever indulged the horrible weed - and I have never ever been bothered by those that do enjoy the weed

I think it is called "live and let live" . . . . "give and take" etc.

Methinks

My philosophy be recommended for and angst free life

Having a give and take and live and let live attitude is not the point but the fact that passive smoking is harmful to health is the point. I have the right not to be exposed to something that may harm me. Breathing in cigarette smoke is very unpleasant for some people and it does bother them. It must be particularly disappointing not to be able to enjoy your balcony given that smoke does not automatically get blown away.

gfw:

'Live and let live' is rather an inappropriate phrase in this context given the impact smoking has on the life expectancy of smokers and those forced to passively inhale their filthy effluence (eg children in cars & smoking parents).

Reading the whole thread on Cruise Critic I formed the opinion that part of the problem was that the passengers - including their daughter who apparently booked the cruise - had not read the brochure where they would have found all the rules about smoking - the fact that passengers can smoke on their balcony. There also seems to have been some muddle about the dining. The passengers thought they had a table for 2 booked on Freedom Dining - well you can't do that. Maybe we've been lucky but in our 14 cruises, all with a balcony, we have never had a problem with neighbours smoking.

I do wonder if the fact that many people will book over the internet, or as a result of an advertisement, and don't read the brochure can cause problems. They don't know about many things, smoking, dress code etc. The number of times I have read a question on a cruise site where someone has posted something like - We have a cruised booked on P&O's Oriana (or whatever ship) can you tell me if there's a dress code? - then when they find out there is they moan. It seems odd that people are prepared to spend a large amount of money without finding out all about the cruiseline they have booked with. (Sorry bad grammar ending a sentence with a preposition - should have said, 'with whom they booked' - just in case another teacher reads this!

Someone I know, a single man, living with his parents, has smoked all his life. Both his parents passively smoked his smoke for donkey's years and both suffered strokes and heart disease. The first question they were asked when they frequently had to go to hospital was 'do you smoke?' Although I understand gfw's sentiments, live and let live is indeed an inappropriate phrase when discussing the rights of smokers, and the perceived 'intolerance' of non-smokers.

Carol, you make good points. Before my first cruise, I read the brochure's small print to find out exactly what the dress code was and shopped accordingly. And I knew exactly what was required and expected. I can't understand anyone not reading up on these things.

Not sure about that, since one can purchase and eat a dish called 'Surf and Turf', being prawns and steak together. But I take your point Derek. To me it is just silly not to read the brochure and then moan about things once you are onboard or when you've returned.

Good day Mr Kane

I stand corrected DK - but smokers have thank fully never ever bothered me, hence my suitably worded post, you must agree that it would be nigh on impossible to find any public location that could cause you any heath problems at all

Do have an enjoyable smoke free day, where ever and what ever with a ;) and a

To many people in this country trying to tell others how they should lead there lives I am a non smoker I avoid those places onboard that allow smoking if I was and I never have been bothered by someone smoking on the balcony I would move inside for a little while but this has never happened.
Might I suggest that as it is permitted to smoke on your balcony if you don't like it don't book it simples my fellow non smokers

No, it is not 'simples'. Smoking is a dying habit (as are the smokers) and is now only indulged by a minority of the population, who therefore should be denied spoiling the enjoyment of other peoples' cruises.

A smoker should have the courtesy of seeking the permission of a balconied neighbour before indulging in their unpleasant fix.

Fingers crossed we have never had a problem with smokers on balconies. As we have only been on 6 cruises there is still plenty of time on next 3 already booked.

Thankfully, that's a problem we don't have to put up with, as we always go for an inside cabin. However, I do wish people would stop burning tobacco on the promenade deck as I hate getting a gutful of smoke when I'm going round.

The problem is that when you book a balcony you don't know if you're going to get a smoker next to you. We had a cigar addict next to us and it was very unpleasant, especially when you think that they are only a couple of feet away.

Put up with it? Or not book a balcony. Or choose a cruise company that doesn't permit smoking on balconies. Even simplerers.

It's a brave uk cruise company that ban smoking onboard they may be a minority but there are still 10 million people that smoke in the UK
I am sure that one day it will happen but not until the habit is well below what it currently is
I would like to see a certain number of balconys adjoining that are for those that can't stand smokers say the lowest deck with balconys the problem is that if they don't sell what do they do with them
I for one agree that it's unpleasant but so is some perfume and body odour and loud music people that shout down the corridor or slam doors but I like to think I am easy going they are on holiday as well and what they get up to is there business not mine

Princess Cruises has announced that from January 2012 smoking will no longer be allowed in their cabins and on their balconies. The new rule, which will be in place from the 15th January is said to be representative of “changing customer preferences” as Princess Cruises’ executive vice-president explains:

“Our consumer studies now show that smokers are in a small minority of our passengers and that the large majority of passengers value having their primary living space onboard smoke-free”

This new legislation follows the implementation of new no-smoking laws throughout northern America and Europe and will be enforced by way of a $250 fine for each offence.

Smokers will still be allowed to ‘light up’ in designated areas onboard each Princess vessel, with spaces included the cigar loungers, portions of the open decks and allocated areas within the nightclubs and casinos.
So you can't smoke on balcony but you can smoke inside some entertainment venues hmm
