Carol, you make good points. Before my first cruise, I read the brochure's small print to find out exactly what the dress code was and shopped accordingly. And I knew exactly what was required and expected. I can't understand anyone not reading up on these things.CaroleF wrote:Reading the whole thread on Cruise Critic I formed the opinion that part of the problem was that the passengers - including their daughter who apparently booked the cruise - had not read the brochure where they would have found all the rules about smoking - the fact that passengers can smoke on their balcony. There also seems to have been some muddle about the dining. The passengers thought they had a table for 2 booked on Freedom Dining - well you can't do that. Maybe we've been lucky but in our 14 cruises, all with a balcony, we have never had a problem with neighbours smoking.
I do wonder if the fact that many people will book over the internet, or as a result of an advertisement, and don't read the brochure can cause problems. They don't know about many things, smoking, dress code etc. The number of times I have read a question on a cruise site where someone has posted something like - We have a cruised booked on P&O's Oriana (or whatever ship) can you tell me if there's a dress code? - then when they find out there is they moan. It seems odd that people are prepared to spend a large amount of money without finding out all about the cruiseline they have booked with. (Sorry bad grammar ending a sentence with a preposition - should have said, 'with whom they booked' - just in case another teacher reads this!

Not sure about that, since one can purchase and eat a dish called 'Surf and Turf', being prawns and steak together. But I take your point Derek. To me it is just silly not to read the brochure and then moan about things once you are onboard or when you've returned. The Monocled Mutineer wrote:Like booking the Seafood Restaurant in Padstow and then complaining on the night that the choice of meat dishes is poor!

'Live and let live' is rather an inappropriate phrase in this context given the impact smoking has on the life expectancy of smokers and those forced to passively inhale their filthy effluence (eg children in cars & smoking parents).

No, it is not 'simples'. Smoking is a dying habit (as are the smokers) and is now only indulged by a minority of the population, who therefore should be denied spoiling the enjoyment of other peoples' cruises.haveabeer wrote:To many people in this country trying to tell others how they should lead there lives I am a non smoker I avoid those places onboard that allow smoking if I was and I never have been bothered by someone smoking on the balcony I would move inside for a little while but this has never happened.
Might I suggest that as it is permitted to smoke on your balcony if you don't like it don't book it simples my fellow non smokers

The problem is that when you book a balcony you don't know if you're going to get a smoker next to you. We had a cigar addict next to us and it was very unpleasant, especially when you think that they are only a couple of feet away.haveabeer wrote:To many people in this country trying to tell others how they should lead there lives I am a non smoker I avoid those places onboard that allow smoking if I was and I never have been bothered by someone smoking on the balcony I would move inside for a little while but this has never happened.

Put up with it? Or not book a balcony. Or choose a cruise company that doesn't permit smoking on balconies. Even simplerers.haveabeer wrote:They may be in the minority but they can smoke on balconies if they wish wether you like it or not so until there is a change in policy you will have to put up with it

Princess Cruises has announced that from January 2012 smoking will no longer be allowed in their cabins and on their balconies. The new rule, which will be in place from the 15th January is said to be representative of “changing customer preferences” as Princess Cruises’ executive vice-president explains:Quizzical Bob wrote:I'm pretty sure that Princess don't allow smoking on balconies.
