Monogrammed Merchandise

Unread post by Dancing Queen »

Some friends of ours have a "Special Anniversary" coming up and what do you buy a couple who have everything

It is a Ruby anniversary.

I'm toying with the idea of something personal with their initials on but just wonder if this might be a "naff" idea, I'm really struggling here does anyone have any suggestions, I'm sure there must be companies who specialise in unusual gifts that are personal to individuals I'm not sure I would actually appreciate something like this myself so just wondered what others thought.

We have got to the stage where, partly because of downsizing, we don't actually want any more "stuff".

We gave some friends of ours, for their ruby wedding, a ruby coloured rhododendron (for the "ruby" bit) plus some gardening vouchers. For close friends, we have given some very nice wine plus a voucher for a meal at a "good" restaurant. I would appreciate something like that, rather than something I would just put away in a cupboard.

I'm another who tends not to want 'stuff'

It might be that GIYF. Try searching for 'experience gifts for ruby wedding' and similar to possibly find a 'red-themed' day out, restaurant name, etc. And there's always a nice red wine. I think there are companies who will put a special personalised label on wine but I don't know about the standard of the content

Gill's gardening idea above is very good - a question of 'thinking outside the box'.

Have they asked for presents ?. I know my Mum & Dad loved having big parties for special anniversaries but always stated no gifts, just donations to their chosen charities if people really wanted to give something.
Maybe check with them, perhaps it's something they would like to do.

Extending the wine idea - what about a very good ruby port?

Yes I'm a lot like that ( not wanting "stuff" ) some good suggestions there, I can't believe I hadn't thought of plants/wine/port etc but will welcome any other suggestions.

I always think a gift voucher to a nice restaurant or something of that ilk always goes down well. Sometimes it's nice on a special occasion to get something you may not necessarily buy for yourself. I'm not keen on monogrammed presents or 'Ruby/Silver/Gold Anniversary' presents. One of our friends went on a cruise for their Silver Wedding Anniversary so we arranged for champagne and chocolates which was a nice surprise for them.
Sometimes it's a headache Jo.

Sue, I quite like the cushion idea ( as well as some Vino/plants ) whenever they stay here they always comment on how pretty my spare room is ( with cushions etc that match the bedding ) so maybe something like that they wouldn't shove in a cupboard and it would be something a little extra which is more personal, even if they only went in a spare room.

It certainly is a headache sometimes Foxy but some great ideas here, I will get them something as a keepsake but also the main present will be something useful and to be enjoyed I think.

How about some form of original artwork? You can buy original copies of cartoons that were published in newspapers and magazines for very reasonable prices and may be able to find one that is particularly apt. Try looking at:

monogrammed cushions/pillows seems to be in the same league as personal number plates . a bit kitch.

we're going to a ruby wedding party this weekend and the hosts have requested no gifts.... so we might get a bunch of dark red roses for them

Deal ..the last time I wore a number plate was at my "hen do" and it was a very large L Plate

Now talking of scruffy sandals, my everyday ones that I just kick around in are so tatty but so comfortable, I actually bought some new ones about a month ago for everyday and they are still in the box

Earlier this month I received two very different, well poles apart really, birthday presents from my two daughters; maybe it's as they see me at my age, again diametrically opposed thoughts but both well received, well I think so, time will tell about one.

One was a very safe option.... afternoon tea at an hotel quite a distance from here so we will book to stay overnight, eat at the Michelin starred restaurant and enjoy the whole package. The other present required me to take a change of clothing and shoes.............. a 4X4 experience for 2 hours. Suffice to say I won't do both on the same day!!

I mention this as it, IMO, shows how diverse is the perception of those buying anyone a present ; this with family members who know me, supposedly, well.... or not!!

TG they didn't buy me a personalised anything or a monogrammed anything, and, heavens forbid, a personalised or monogrammed item of clothing or something for the home. Almost as bad as logo wear which again seems a prerequisite to being perceived as cool these days, so very wide of the mark. Fair enough for the younger generation where image is everything but on a wrinkly it screams, I want to be accepted as part of the in crowd which I find very sad.

So, Jo, a bottle of vintage port, an appropriate red plant for the garden, afternoon tea or a 4X4 experience??????????? :relaxed:

Port and a plant I think Wolfie having given it much thought yesterday.

Why I even considered something I myself wouldn't want must have been a moment of madness ( no comments please  )

Thanks again everyone, decision now made :D

Your 4x4 sounds interesting do tell us how it goes, I would love that

DQ, I think one way of looking at 'what to buy someone' is made easier if you think what you would like for yourself.

You have 'solved' your problem with something that is safe and useful and easy to shop for.!!

Very true Andrea which is what I normally do, I just got this silly idea in my head that they might like something personal to them, I think probably because they seem years and years older than us when in truth they're not :o but they do have some very old fashioned ideas both in clothes and home décor, oh goodness that sounds awful but I'm sure you know what I mean, better stop digging the hole now

DQ
it may be possible to find a newspaper for the date they married or even a copy of the local paper announcing their wedding
that would be personal but not overly kitch
