Facial recognition advertising

Unread post by Kendhni »

Tesco petrol stations use face-scan tech to target ad
It's not new but it is a significant adoption of facial recognition .. apparently the accuracy is about 85% in identifying gender/age .. however I await the complaints (and complexes) when they get it wrong ... knowing my luck I will get the advert for 'Lillets' and Julie will get the advert for 'Lynx for Men'. :)

Maybe I need to wear a false beard when visiting a Tescos petrol station .. or maybe just pencil on a moustache before filling up?
Maybe a biker with their crash helmet on will get adverts featuring Duncan Goodhew?

It is scary that a few lines of code can pretty much replace just about anybody.

Advertising (per se) simply provides me with entertainment. I look for the 'hidden' meaning of words - for example I translate 'made to measure' as 'forced to fit' especially in this day and age when the wealth of truly skilled we used to have in this country appears to have vastly diminished.

So, Mr T can advertise for all he likes - if really won't affect what I buy, when I buy it or indeed where and how the purchase is made.

Add to that the fact that we use a vehicle fuel price website to find the best current prices no matter where we are - and it simply equates to the fact that we don't use Tesco fuel more than once a year (if that) any more.

As far as I am concerned it is pointless. When I go to pay for my petrol that is what I do - open door, enter, give pump number to cashier, pay, exit - I do not look around so I will not be interested anything that they are wanting me to buy.

Same here. Just another gimmick as far as I'm concerned.

Can't be doing with all that faffing about. Get in, pay and get out. Job done

Stephen, is it true that after the facial recognition software had it's way with you, the associated advert was for plastic surgery...or is that just a wicked rumour?

Thinking about this a bit more - Tesco could be shooting themselves in the foot a bit! Imagine the scene ..... people go into a Tesco fuel station wishing to 'quickly' get their fuel and equally 'quickly' pay for it and get on with their lives. Then all this advertising kicks in and people stop to browse and buy stuff in the filling station or leave their cars on the forecourt to nip to the store and get something.

I can see queues and irate people! Oh joy.
